Removing Moss From A Felt Roof

Removing moss from a felt roof. Make a strong solution by dissolving it in a watering can then pour it over the roof. Work on one small section at a time which allows you better control of the brush and your scrubbing motions. If the roof has no chippings then brush the surface to remove the growth and any debris such as leaves and twigs. First knock away any large lumps of moss with a brush or broom.

Before applying a moss remover cleaner use a scrub brush 3 15 the home depot or a long handled soft bristle brush to gently scrape or pluck moss from the roof shingles or tiles. Point the hose towards the top of the roof and rinse off the moss killing solution along with the dead moss. Scrub softly and don t apply too much pressure. Even so you will always need to mount the roof later on in order to remove the dead moss.

Mix the bleach with the water in a large bucket. A simple and cost effective way of removing moss is to manually scrape the moss from your roof using a stiff long handled brush and a trowel. The first is to use a bleach and water combination. Carefully get up to your roof and brush downward to knock the moss loose.

Rinse the roof again with the hose to remove any remaining loose moss sitting on the roof. Put water over the roof and moss and then put bleach onto the moss this will turn the moss brown in minutes. If the water will not reach the peak of the roof from the ground you can spray while standing on a ladder. If you need to get rid of moss on your roof the hardest part is the labor required.

Best done on a dry day it can be done by the homeowner if they are confident in accessing the roof or alternatively get a professional in. Carefully place a ladder near the area of moss growth and don slip resistant shoes old clothes rubber gloves and eye. Get a stiff bristle scrub brush and attach it to the end of a pole if you don t have a random pole hanging around a broom will work as well. Liquid moss killers cover the roof more evenly than dry powders and they let you stay on the ground for the application.

There are a couple of methods of removing moss. Work in downward motions again avoiding upward motion that may lift or loosen shingles. As you wet down the moss infected area of the roof use a soft bristle brush to gently scrub moss away. Take care not to let it go on other plants it will kill them as well.

If the roof has stone chippings then brush them to one side which will remove much of the moss growth as well as allowing the roof surface to dry.
